How to Prepare for Addiction Rehab

Many addicts experience anticipatory anxiety when thinking about entering substance abuse treatment. Many questions such as what should I expect, will I be able to see and speak to my family and will I be in pain, plague the addict prior to treatment. These feelings of trepidation some times prevent addicts from following through with treatment and getting help for their addiction. Having insight about the expectations of treatment is helpful to decrease anticipatory anxiety.

  • Let go of preconceived notions about treatment. There are many reality television shows out about drug and alcohol rehab centers, as well as television and movie portrayals. Unfortunately, this perspective is through the vision of directors and producers to gain ratings. Rehab is about healing, not drama.
  • Prepare to follow rules. Some addicts feel that they don’t want to be told what to do. Rehab is a structured environment. This is to help the addict regain stability and decrease chaos that the addiction thrives off of. The rules and regulations of a treatment center are there for safety reasons and to protect the addict from unhealthy behavior patterns which he/she once participated in while using drugs and/or alcohol.
  • Take suggestions from addiction staff. There are many slogans which imply the reason addicts need to listen to others who are not active in addiction initially. One of those slogans is: “Your best thinking got you here.” The main focus for addicts active in addiction is obtaining and using substances. Addiction hurts your ability to think logically.
  • Have an open mind about change. Although addiction is characteristically chaotic, it can produce a black and white style of thinking in the addict. This style of thinking is based upon extremes and keeps the addict in a rigid mindset decreasing flexibility for change. The addict should be aware of all or nothing answers and he or she should attempt to find the gray area.

Entering addiction treatment is a good decision. The disease of addiction does not want the addict to get better because treatment will weaken the power of the disease. The addict’s thoughts will become stronger regarding avoiding treatment, especially as the enter date approaches. It is important to have an extremely strong and supportive network surrounding the addict. This will help combat the internal struggle the addict will have about going to treatment.

Letting go of preconceived notions, preparing to follow the rules, having an open mind and taking suggestions from addiction treatment staff is the best advice when preparing to enter addiction treatment.

What is Drug Rehab?

Drug Rehab is a safe place for addicts to go and rehabilitate from their drug and alcohol dependencies. Drug rehab contains specific components to help educate the addict about living a life that is drug and/or alcohol free. Addiction treatment staff is available to offer suggestions, counsel, and support the addict through this process. Drug rehab can be for dual diagnosis or for chemical dependency depending on what is offered at the facility.

  • Dual Diagnosis – Dual Diagnosis is the combination of chemical dependency and mental health issues. For example, an addict may be addicted to OxyContin and suffer from depression simultaneously. Both issues will need to be treated in drug rehab as one impacts the other.
  • Chemical Dependency – An addict who does not have a mental health issue will enter a drug rehab program and his/her focus will mainly be on living sober.

Both of these types of rehabs offer the same track for helping the addict learn about and obtain recovery. There are five core components within a drug rehab:

  1. Community Meetings – The addict/alcoholic will attend community meetings with others in the drug rehab program weekly to discuss issues that the members of the community may have with one another. This will be overseen by addiction treatment staff and addicts/alcoholics will be able to practice healthy conflict resolution skills.
  2. Primary Group – In drug rehab the addict/alcoholic will be assigned to a therapist who will be conducting a primary group to attend daily. In the primary group, the addict/alcoholic will be able to discuss feelings that are surfacing regarding past behaviors and issues regarding addiction. The group will be able to relate to one another, offer support and challenge each other to change behaviors.
  3. Individual Counseling – An individual therapist, who also will conduct the primary groups, will be assigned to each addict/alcoholic as he or she enters treatment. These individual sessions are confidential between the therapist and the addict/alcoholic. In this forum the addict/alcoholic will be able to discuss underlying issues and prevention skills for relapse that are individualized.
  4. Educational Lectures- Addicts and alcoholics in drug rehab will attend educational lectures which will cover topics such as: relapse prevention, healthy relationships, communication techniques, spirituality, an introduction to the 12 Steps, etc.
  5. Family Counseling – A comprehensive drug rehab center will offer a family counseling/education component. During family counseling the therapist will assist with helping families in beginning to repair their relationships from the damage created by addiction.
Drug rehab should be comprehensive and include all of the different areas listed above. This is an example of a well rounded drug rehab structure that offers opportunities for change throughout the program.

Treating Alcoholism

Making an informed decision about alcohol treatment is an important step in the entire alcohol addiction recovery process.  In fact, it can make a huge difference.  It can be the diffference between a successful and sustained recovery and falling back into old drinking habits as soon as rehab is over. That is that last thing that Drug Rehab wants for you and your family.

While there are some important therapeutic features that are common to alcohol addiction treatment programs, there are some differences.  Big ones. Knowing how to make the best match between you and the best treatment center for you is what Drug Rehab is all about.

What is alcohol addiction treatment?

Alcohol addiction treatment comes in many varieties and with many components, but they all have one goal in mind:  giving an alcoholic the tools that they need to rejoin their family and society and avoid alcohol problems in the future.

It sounds straightforward, but it is a complicated process that is as unique as the person who is fighting to regain control over an alcohol addiction is.

This section of the Drug Rehab website explores alcohol addiction treatment, alcohol addiction recovery, alcohol addiction rehab programs in general, and inpatient alcohol rehab programs more specifically.

Throughout every part of alcohol rehab, from detox and withdrawal management to inpatient alcohol addiction treatment to alcohol addiction aftercare and recovery, an effective and comprehensive alcohol treatment program needs to adjust to meet your needs as your progress through treatment.  Missing a crucial aspect of treatment, glossing over problems that led to the alcohol abuse in the first place, or having a rehab care plan that is too rigid will not lead to recovery long-term.

Finding alcohol addiction treatment

It isn’t just about doing a web search or asking a friend.  It’s about having too many choices, too much information, and not understanding what to look for in an effective and client-centered alcohol addiction treatment center.   It’s about finding the best alcohol addiction treatment for you, to give you or your alcoholic loved one the best chance for recovery.

Drug Rehab has professional counselors to help you find the best treatment and rehab options for your alcohol addiction.  Call us, we’re here to help.

About Drug Addiction Treatment

Making an informed decision about addiction treatment is an important step in the entire drug addiction recovery process.  Drug Rehab feels education is a crucial part of this decision.  We are here to inform you about all your rehab treatment options and help you choose the one that best fits your addiction treatment needs.

No two people are alike in their addictions and the complicated path that led them to being a full-blown addict.  And no family and financial situation is the same. So how can all drug addiction rehab programs be right for all people?  They can’t.

Getting the needs of the addict met isn’t just a matter of going to any rehab center; it is going to the best rehab center for them.  Drug Rehab can help you find the drug addiction treatment that will meet your needs and focus on you as an individual.  This will improve your chances for long-term recovery from drugs.

What is drug addiction treatment?

Drug addiction treatment is as individualized as the person (and family) that is seeking help.   Whether you are addicted to cocaine, crack, crystal meth, marijuana, OxyContin or another substance, there are rehab treatment programs that can help you obtain a life free from drugs.

The goals of drug addiction treatment are to get you off a drug, multiple drugs or a combination of drugs and alcohol, and help you understand what led to and supported the addiction in the first place. Another other crucial goal is to give you the tools you’ll need to stay off drugs in the future.

Phases in a Drug Addiction Rehab Treatment Program include:
  • Medical management and partial hospitalization program
  • Residential
  • Day/Night with Sober Living Housing
  • Intensive outpatient
  • Outpatient
  • Aftercare
  • Alumni activities

Specific therapy and Treatment for Drug Addiction will include:
  • Drug addiction education
  • Group and individual counseling (for addicts and their family)
  • Relapse prevention
  • Sharing and support from others who have been where you are right now
  • Learning and practicing healthy lifestyle choices and activities
  • Participation in community support groups

I don’t need help finding drug addiction treatment—or do I?

It isn’t just about doing a web search or asking a friend.  It’s about having too many choices, too much information, and not understanding what to look for in an effective and client-centered drug addiction rehab treatment center.   It’s about finding the best drug addiction treatment for you, to give you or your addicted loved one the best chance for recovery.

Start the Path to Recovery

Choosing a drug and alcohol treatment center that is not right for you can be the difference between success and failure in the recovery process.  Drug Rehab is here to help you decide which of the hundreds of addiction treatment rehab programs best meets your needs.

The most important part is that you get the right addiction treatment, not just any treatment.  There are many variables such as drug of choice, past treatment centers, length of stay, location, finances, insurance and other factors.

There are many things to consider about Addiction Treatment Programs:
  • What kind of addiction do you have?
  • Do you have other problems such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder or post-traumatic stress issues that affect your addiction problems?
  • Do you have a healthy support system in place at home?  Drug and alcohol addiction affects the entire family, not just the person with the addiction.
  • Have you relapsed before?  Maybe the program you attended didn't give you the tools you needed to succeed after rehab.
  • Should you attend at program close to home or in another state?

Please explore the pages in this section of our website to get information on each of your own answers to these considerations.  The best way to choose a treatment center is to find one that specializes in your specific addictions and issues.  The worst thing you can do is try to make your situation fit just any rehab center.

Drug Rehab is here to help you explore the possibilities for a healthy, drug and alcohol free future.

The Right Treatment is Crucial

Going through rehab doesn’t assure success, but finding the right treatment center can increase your chances for long term sobriety.  Client and families have shared their painful relapse stories with us, and wonder just what we offer that is different.

Anyone can stay sober or clean while in inpatient rehab.  It is when they are back home that counts.  Effective drug and alcohol treatment programs have solid plans for this aftercare period, as well as a client-centered approach to care during active phase of treatment.

Drug Rehab only connects clients with successful rehab programs that offer the aftercare treatment options that will meet our client’s unique needs.  We only suggest programs that we have seen in action and know can offer the best chance for recovery for each individual client and their family.
